LOCAL 3390
April 2009 Update
Posted On: May 07, 2009

First off, I’d like to thank each and every member of our Local for your support, whether spoken or in silent approval of my election by acclamation.  I look forward to the challenge ahead of me.  Filling Lt. Waters’ shoes is going to be a big task.

As we head into summer, I’d like each and every member of this great Local to think about what we want our Local to be.  Keep in mind, there are some things that are not modifiable.  We will continue to negotiate for improvements in regards to wages, hours, and working conditions.  We will continue to represent our members in respect to discipline and our work environment.  And we will continue to be active in the political arena, both local and state.  But our identity and our culture is fair game, in my opinion.

As our Department looks to reshape its organizational culture, I’d like us to re-evaluate the culture that we’ve created within our Local and make sure it’s consistent with the culture that each of us wants.  We also want to hear from you if you have suggestions for ways we can change or strengthen our current cultural identity.  For example, do we want to be Brothers and Sisters that support, encourage, and respect each other regardless of the current circumstances?  I hope so!  I also am not completely confident that we’ve done a good job with that in the past.  This is a small but important example of a cultural component that your Executive Board wants to hear from you.

Also, do we want to continue having “the few” perform the majority of the work of the Local?  I hope not!  I’m very excited to follow in the Chief’s footsteps in regards to mentorship and growth opportunities for our younger and/or newer members.  If you’ve ever considered getting involved with your Local please contact a member of your Executive Board and let us know.  Your Principle Officers and Shift Stewards are excited to hear from you!  I hope it goes without saying that your participation at Local meetings is invaluable!  We’ve recently lowered our meeting quorum to 15% of our total membership, but that is actually not good for our Local or its leadership.  Please re-commit to coming to meetings.  Also, please share if there are reasonable things that could be done to improve your attendance.

Please think about the questions that I’ve asked in this e-mail, talk to your elected members of the Local’s leadership, talk to each other, and come to May’s meeting prepared to have a brief, but meaningful, discussion about our Local’s vision and culture.  We look forward to hearing from you all!
